Time to Book a Team Building Treasure Hunt.
Posted on: 02/05/2025By Tim Carter (Owner of Black Cat Treasure Hunts)
I see May as the perfect time to be considering
team building treasure hunts or summer party treasure hunts. If January sees a flurry of hen party treasure hunt enquiries following Christmas and New Year engagements, then the last month of Spring is a tactically sound time to boost team morale early into a new budget year. Different companies often have different goals for their team building treasure hunts, so set out below are some questions and answers designed to help you if you are tasked with organising or choosing a team building event.
Q.
How can a treasure hunt help team building?A. A team building treasure hunt organised by Black Cat Treasure Hunts is all about getting people to work together and having a lot of fun achieving a common goal. It is an excellent opportunity to get to know people you may not know so well from different departments or anyone working from home. There are no team leaders as such and line managers/directors/CEO`s will be alongside the person who joined the company the day before in completing photo/video challenges and tracking down answers to a range of cryptic, amusing and varied questions.
Q.
How can our team building event be made `even more special`?A. Nothing is off the table! Here are some requests/suggestions from a selection of team building treasure hunts over the last few years that made these events memorable.
*"Can you make our questions extra hard. It wouldn`t be the worst thing in the world if a few of the teams got a little bit lost at times!"
...Ha ha!..I loved that one. I am always up for a challenge to make things harder. No pain no gain?!
*"The winning team will get £250 worth of vouchers to spend on their meal tonight. Is that ok?"
...I`m always willing to back incentives for friendly competition. Black Cat prizes for the winners are generally plastic, golden trophies and medals with some less expensive (ha ha) prizes for the lower ranked teams. Either or both types of reward go down well.
*"Can our theme be crime and famous murders?"
...OK..this was for a team of defence lawyers, but I love doing research, so this was right up my street."
*"Our theme is witches and wizards. Can you dress up too if we supply a wizard outfit?!"
...Ha ha!...This really happened and I did!
*"Quite a few of our staff have recently joined. Do you have a suggestion to help the team bond quickly?"
...I like to include photos and fun fact info about participants into team building treasure hunts. This can break the ice with newcomers and adds to amusement on the way round.
Q. Where are your best team building treasure hunts?
A. I cover anywhere across Sussex and in targeted areas of
London (Shoreditch, Westminster and Camden). You can decide whether to stay near to where you work or travel out. A Brighton team building treasure hunt is always popular for companies from the city and across the country...actually internationally too. Norwegians have been out in force in 2025!
London has great scope for themes and heading out across East or West Sussex can be a refreshing change of scenery too. Chichester, Lewes and Hastings for example have great routes.
Q.
Do you have any short treasure hunts for team building?A. Yes, I strongly suggest my
Bank Heist themed treasure hunt in Brighton. It is only an hour long as opposed to the normal two hours. It is action packed, creates tension with a race against time and against other teams too. Bribery, get away cars, providing alibi`s and leaving no trace of your bank raid all play their part.
Q. Does Black Cat choose the teams?A. No, that would be up to you to decide how best to split up the group. In that way when I attend, I will be totally impartial. Normally, the only person I will know will be whoever I liaised with to discuss and make the booking. On a recent treasure hunt after marking, I had the CEO`s team down in 8th place out of 10 teams. Apparently, he had never lost before in this kind of event! Definitely a team building day to remember as he graciously commended all the teams.
Q.
How does a team building treasure hunt compare in cost to other experiences in Brighton? I have a budget to think about.A. There are lots of great activities to choose from of course and it is difficult to compare like for like. If you want to see the sights of Brighton without going in them, then the Hop on, Hop off bus is about the same target price...only you don`t really get the same team building effect or thrill of competition. The Escape rooms are good too and provide team building and competition. You won`t explore Brighton though and they will cost significantly more.
A guided tour will leave you with more depth of knowledge as to what you have seen but is not truly team building as such...after all...there are no teams. The prices will be similar.
Q.
Are there rival treasure hunts to Black Cat Treasure Hunts?A. There are and they are good at what they do but none of them can match the personalised, team building treasure hunts of Black Cat, either in price or content. This is not a criticism ..it`s because they do not have the time to keep changing routes/questions/challenges/themes to suit you. Those that use more technology to achieve some of these aims will charge you way over a Black Cat Treasure Hunt quote. Others closer in price or cheaper will use the same route/questions etc. Not really the personal touch.
Q.
Finally, can you in one short paragraph tell me how a Brighton team building treasure hunt or a London team building treasure hunt will fit seamlessly into my overall plans for a memorable and rewarding day that my line manager will sign off and think kindly of me for at least a month!?A. I will arrive at your chosen starting point (a hotel or restaurant for example) in good time to explain the treasure hunt and give guidelines. I will provide everything you need and set teams off. I will liaise with teams during the treasure hunt via WhatsApp. At the end I will mark the rest of the treasure hunt and give a short presentation explaining teams` high points (and a few disasters!) and then award the fun prizes. Sound good?
