Four Treasure Hunts and a Museum but No Holiday.
Posted on: 02/10/2024By Tim Carter (Owner of Black Cat Treasure Hunts)New treasure hunt routes or treasure hunts away from Black Cat Treasure Hunts HQ in Brighton can be time consuming. It`s great fun writing a varied selection of treasure hunts but it can take you away from time spent on the website and social media. No bad thing you might think, but it`s important to stay connected with regular treasure hunters. This was evidenced by a recent comment:
" I haven`t seen you on Instagram for the last few weeks. You must have been on holiday, right?"
After I had choked on my Danish or did I spit out a mouthful of cappuccino whilst I wasn`t sunning myself on the south coast of France, I managed to reply. "Ha! Not this time. I have been busy with some groundbreaking treasure hunts!"
Of course, my enquirer was desperate to hear more, and I feel it is only fair to share with you what I told him.
1. 167 treasure hunters in Bexhill.
This was a big day for Black Cat Treasure Hunts in all senses of the word. Compiling a teambuilding treasure hunt for 13 teams of 12 and 13 people is a massive undertaking. Add in that it was for a company who I have written treasure hunts for in the same place (Bexhill) and the pressure was on to write something fresh and original for them.
After several hours, actually more like three, I had ideas and a new route that proved to be able to accommodate this massive number. 167 is as far as I know a record for a treasure hunt in Bexhill. If that is not true, then I am afraid it is too late. I have told everyone it is...go on..sue me! Actually, please don`t! I think my expenditure on cool drinks during the preparation of that hunt has probably boosted Bexhill`s economy significantly.
Meeting in the middle of Egerton Park turned out to be a bit of a masterstroke if I do say so myself. An early video challenge in the park contrived to split up the teams nicely before they decided on which route to follow.
Bexhill has lots of quirky stories and unusual facts that you may not know. For example, Bob Marley sang his first British concert at the De La Warr Pavilion. This all added to the successA hot buffet meal that you could eat inside or out at The Sackville Hotel and Bistro at the end was ideal. So there you have it...that is what has kept me busy.
Hang on Black Cat...you must have done more than one treasure hunt in Bexhill?!
2.
Chichester teambuilding treasure hunt.Chichester is a favoured territory of mine for a treasure hunt. As a result, I was encouraged to see an enquiry for one there from a company based in nearby Bognor Regis.
Whereas the Bexhill treasure hunt required me to write new and interesting clues and challenges, it was the hiring company from Bognor who supplied me with a whole selection of ideas for challenges in Chichester. Easy money you might think, what are you moaning about?! I`d have to say nothing really other than the test was to turn their ideas into properly unique challenges that gave them the impression that the initial suggestions were all mine in the first place! A Gangnam Style Tik Tok dance in front of the Guildhall or Caesar like proclamations on top of a Roman wall seemed to do the trick.
3.
Back in Brighton (1) Anyone for cricket?
A stag do with a few selected females and a Prosecco brunch by the beach before the treasure hunt made me fear for the worst. Add in that all 22 of them were wearing Reform UK rosettes and one or two had `Farage in Charge` t shirts meant I really thought the fear could turn into reality. Now...my treasure hunts are not political, but Brighton is not really a hotbed for Reform UK--5% in one constituency, 8% in another and did not contest the third indicated a possibly cool welcome for them was on the cards. Oh..and the groom was a big Crystal Palace fan - the team Brighton fans consider their biggest and least liked rivals! Another Prosecco anyone?
It turned out they could have taught all political parties a thing or two with their behaviour, humour and great participation in the treasure hunt. After a final round up at a newly discovered pub (for me) called The Blind Busker, it was time for the group to head off for an afternoon of Twenty/20 cricket at the nearby county ground in Hove.
As they went on their merry way (literally) I reflected on the new section of treasure hunt I had discovered to link the seafront to the Blind Busker. Interesting, fun and worth the effort. It was at that point I remembered that I had set myself the task of repeating the trick for an upcoming stag/hen party treasure hunt with a murder/mystery theme.
4. Back in Brighton (2) Murder/Mystery and a Cheetah too.
Whilst hoping that Cheetah will be a new keyword for my SEO I should add that this new route I needed was going to start from the Booth Museum of Natural History on Dyke Rd. I chose the starting point as it is close to the accommodation of the group booking the event.
Not only was that a sound reason for my choice but it turns out that this museum was a great little venue with loads of quirky items. Quirky?!...of course quirky...it`s in Brighton. My murder/mystery treasure hunts use the guests as the suspects, and I ask some random questions about them before writing it. Several replies mentioned spiders as a fear or dislike. Ok...well...if you walk through the middle section of this museum I`m sure you will have the opportunity to face your fear before long!
It`s not all about the museum though and I had to concentrate on regular questions about the murder to provide a route that eventually became central, linking to the more familiar clock tower area. This group are due in August.I would say I`d take that holiday my acquaintance with the original question had talked about so that they can`t query my inclusion of a tarantula so early on, but it turns out I had agreed to be present to do the marking!
So, there you have four varied treasure hunts that I have been busy with. If you are just back from your own holiday and would like to book an original teambuilding or hen/stag treasure hunt for late Summer or early Autumn please get in touch on
