The Best Treasure Hunts of 2022. The Winners are...

Posted on: 17/11/2023

Black Cat Treasure Hunts likes to be ahead of the game when possible and, with the year ending and, rather than waiting until New Year`s Eve, I have decided that the time is right for my treasure hunt awards to be announced for the best treasure hunts during 2022.
There are four categories of Sussex treasure hunts (although a Hampshire based one did make the shortlist for best family treasure hunt!) and the purpose of these awards is to give you some inspiration as to why you might like to choose a Black Cat treasure hunt for 2023, and what to expect once you have.

Best Team Building Treasure Hunt
I always like attending team building treasure hunts and it was with some excitement I was able to do the on the day organising and marking/judging for this particular one.
A pirate theme was mentioned...an ice bucket with drinks (remember the Summer was good this year) + a buffet and a new venue for me to explore made this a likely candidate from the word go.
Mainly based in Hove, at St Ann`s Well Gardens, numerous teams were split into three starting points from which the aim was to complete as many of the challenges as possible and answer all the questions. The passed the county cricket ground where needless to say a few pirates made friends at the home of the Sharks!
Pirate accessories incorporated hooks, eyepatches, hats, and parrots. These were all used in challenges. One team took quite a detour to get to a pub called the Fortune of War, which has a pirate vibe of its own. High points were captured there. As teams completed this circular route with tall tales, interesting video clips and smiles gained from their adventure, I knew this would prove to be one of the year`s highlights.

Best Family Treasure Hunt
There are many reasons for a family treasure hunt including birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas parties. The winner is this category was for a 50th birthday and comprised a driving treasure hunt around a northern part of Sussex. It was actually with a family who had been on a driving treasure hunt back in 2014 dressed as Wacky Races characters and were now returning with more cars and more dressing up of teams (and cars!). Harry Potter, Peter Pan and Mario Brothers teams took part to name but a few.
The winning team, dressed as superheroes (as shown in the photo) absolutely blitzed the questions and used their younger children within the following challenge (used as the route passed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle`s (of Sherlock Holmes fame) statue.):
**Take a short video clip of a teammate (or indeed a stranger) impersonating one of his chosen sleuths (up to 6pts): As Sherlock Holmes with a deerstalker, a pipe and saying the words, “Elementary my dear Watson.” or..as Poirot with a stiff military moustache, a bow tie and saying, “These little grey cells.” ..or..as Kojak, bald, sucking a lollipop and saying “Who loves ya baby!”    *All the words must be quoted in the appropriate accent**
A lot of hilarity ensued in the Newick/Crowborough/Hartfield areas whilst pizza and beer back at home accompanied the comparison of videos.

Best Hen Party Treasure Hunt
No dressing up required or chosen for this and I have to say there was fierce competition as to who could be judged the winner. Information and photos related to the bride to be had been worked into a wide selection of the questions and challenges for the teams. Eventually I chose a hen party treasure hunt from back in the Spring that I attended.
This group chose to start from their accommodation over in Sillwood Rd (Brighton) where there is quite a lot of hen party accommodation (on edge of Brighton/Hove border). The route was interesting and finished at the clock tower. I returned, with the last team to finish, back to the start point to hold the judging. A clearly buoyant and motivated set of teams were very jolly and thought I might like interviewing as a career (I`m definitely not that intimidating ha! ha!) when I asked for their photo/video answers to the challenges!
This treasure hunt had been well co-ordinated by the bride to be`s Sister, with a good supply of photos and info in advance, which always helps. Regular pre-event communication on both sides always bodes well for a successful event too.

Best Non-Brighton/Hove Treasure Hunt
I have to say that the Brighton area is the most popular as a venue for Black Cat Treasure Hunts. However, I always enjoy a treasure hunt outside the capital of Black Cat`s treasure hunt kingdom too!
Haslemere (Hampshire) featured a very successful children`s birthday treasure hunt, whilst treasure hunts in Hastings and Rye in particular get honourable mentions.
The winner this time around is in Seaford, which happens to be where I live! Now before you can say fix or rigged, I should stress that this one had been a long time in the making having had a Covid delay. Teams from the local chamber of commerce and nearby Newhaven Chamber of Commerce provided some highly entertaining video clip completions of challenges. A Sound of Music related challenge using Seaford for the backdrop meant The Hills are Alive took on a whole new outlook and interpretation!
This was an evening treasure hunt which had concerned me a little, but it didn`t deter the teams in producing some great sun setting photos. It also meant a smooth transition into the pub at the end for the marking and prize giving.

I hope I have given you some ideas for an entertaining and original activity to enhance your day. For further information or to begin a booking, contact me (Tim) on info@blackcattreasurehunts.co.uk   or call me on 01323 655346.
